But before we get to that, let's talk about the term "Champagne." The French understandably want that word used only under these circumstances: when referring to bubbly (1) made from grapes grown and vinified in the French wine region of Champagne, and (2) made using the traditional méthode champenoise.
In 2006, the European Union and the USA signed a wine trade agreement in which the USA agreed to not allow new uses of terms previously considered semi-generic, such as Champagne, Burgundy, Chablis, Sauterne or Chianti, on US wine labels. However, winemakers who had previously been using those terms on labels were "grandfathered in" and allowed to continue using the terms. For example, Korbel Champagne Cellars in Sonoma County, California, founded in 1882, has been making méthode champenoise wines for 134 years. So Korbel legally uses the term "champagne" on its labels, phrasing it as "California Champagne" or "Russian River Valley Champagne." Wineries that weren't grandfathered in use the term "Sparkling Wine" on their labels.

Some tasting rooms, wine bars, spirits shops and other venues around the U.S. are offering special champagne deals on Champagne Day.
